A Busy Mom’s 5-Minute Makeup Routine

| | Updated:

Nate and I have been doing a ton of photo shoots for various brands lately.

I am SO thrilled to see the media development end of the business really picking up. It's always been a dream of ours to break into direct photo and video development. We take pictures for brands and then pass them off for their advertising and social media use, oftentimes not even needing to post on our own channels. Obviously we enjoy sharing products and experiences here, but this branch of our work offers a certain refreshing degree of solitude.

The one thing I'm not a huge fan of? The hours. As most skilled photographers will tell you, the “golden hours” out in nature are sunrise and sunset.

I am not a morning person.

Sunrise is so not my thing.

Alas, I'm often a subject in these photo shoots…so I have to pull myself together in the AM. And quickly!

I used to spend a ton of time in the morning working on my skin tone, trying to even out blotches and bumps. After kids came into the picture, my pampering time got drastically shortened and I had to figure out a 5-minute makeup routine. For awhile now it has consisted of the same few steps: a quick swipe of eye shadow, a heavy-handed application of eyeliner, some lip balm and tinted moisturizer. I've been loyal to a certain eyeliner for years, and I'm not picky about my balm.

The skin stuff, though? That's the really critical base of this 5-minute makeup routine.

Last year, after a lengthy search that consisted of many hours spent in trial mode at ULTA, I finally met my makeup match. Complexion Rescue from our sponsor, bareMinerals, is the go-to morning essential that keeps me looking refreshed and well-rested (even if I've only slept three or four hours).

I'll admit that on most mornings I don't even manage to squeeze in my 5-minute makeup routine before I leave the house. So this stuff has a place in my purse for easy on-the-go application.

It's a BB cream, a color corrector, a moisturizer and a sunscreen. It also includes electrolytes, an antioxidant and marine botanicals to keep my skin healthy and youthful…all critically-important for someone like me who – let's be honest – doesn't get around to moisturizing or even washing her face every day.

The result is dewy, hydrated skin. My flaws aren't camouflaged in layers of stifling chemicals, but they are balanced and evened out.

That's all any mother wants for her life, isn't it? Beautiful balance.

For everyone asking for bump shots, here's the latest-and-greatest as this baby starts to make his presence known!

So we can get up, get work done, get back home for naptime…and look good doing it.

All with just a 5-minute makeup routine.
