Nate’s parents have a ton of orange trees on their property, so we’re constantly looking for good recipes that call for oranges. This fruity desert uses orange zest and cream cheese for a tangy treat that isn’t too sweet. Everyone loves it and it’s quickly become one of my in-laws’ signature desserts!
1 1/2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 tsp salt
1 cup butter, softened
2 tsp orange extract
1 tsp grated orange zest
One 8-ounce package cream cheese
4 tbsp softened butter
One 1-lb box powdered sugar
2 tbsp orange zest
2 tbsp orange juice
Mix flour, sugar, salt, butter, eggs, orange extract and orange zest for batter together in a large bowl. Beat with a handheld mixer until blended.
Pour batter into a greased 9×13-inch pan and bake at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes.
In a large bowl, whip the butter and cream cheese for frosting together with a handheld mixer.
Gradually beat the powdered sugar into the frosting mixture.
Beat the orange zest and juice into the frosting.
When brownies are done, allow to cool. Pierce brownies throughout with a fork and spread frosting over them.
This is a nice, light dessert for a spring or summer gathering and goes great with any meal. I even occasionally eat orange brownies for breakfast, and they’ve been a hit at brunches in the past.
