Last weekend was Earth Day, and I've seen a ton of people talking about their fun family activities. “What do you do on Earth Day?” they ask. “We clean up the beach!” or “We dig a community garden.” My own family usually volunteers in a community project or simply takes the day to get out and enjoy the park for a bit. This Earth Day, however, we did absolutely nothing.
I slept almost the entire day, grounded by an awful bout of morning sickness, which I've determined to start calling “all day sickness.” I'm assuming a man must have named it. Some Boy was thankfully self-entertaining that day, endlessly amused by a new toy and DVD I bought for him the day before. I'm big on holidays and as this was his first Earth Day, I felt a little bit bad about not making it an occasion to remember and document in his numerous baby books.
But then the week continued and I realized…every day is Earth Day around here. The day after Earth Day, I cleaned up the house with natural cleaning products from Seventh Generation. I fed Some Boy sustainable food. Yesterday, I pulled weeds in the garden and worked on creating a vegetable plot. This morning, I took the recycling bin out for pick up. Tonight I'll read The Lorax to Some Boy at bedtime. Tomorrow I'll create a craft with non-recyclable items that would otherwise end up as trash. This weekend, we'll picnic with reusable items and clean up the park while we're at it.
