A lot of people have asked about baby Minion after I shared how we celebrated his first birthday with a big old cake smash celebration. He is doing SO well!
Some of you may remember that we experienced a severe setback with Minion after birth, and it completely shook up our lives for awhile. I'm happy to say that he has sprung back like a champ! This kid is full of vigor and smiles. Everyone who meets him says that he is one of the happiest babies they've ever seen.
As far as milestones, our third baby has learned some things faster than his siblings. People say that being a first child means you get more attention and coddling, but I personally think second and third babies have it MADE. There's no more trial and error. Not as many work-life struggles. We experience a learning curve whenever we add a new person to the mix, but we no longer get stuck on the nitty gritty details. The first kids have shown us that time with each other is the most important thing. That blissful clarity directs every decision we make.
Here are the big milestones we've seen with our third baby – and a few tips to help other busy parents savor the little moments!
Baby Minion's First Year Milestones
6 weeks: First smile. At me, of course.
7 weeks: First grab. He reached out and took hold of his dad’s chin in the hospital.
12 weeks: First laugh. We walked into an elevator full of my friends at a conference (We All Grow) and he thought it was funny to see so many ladies fawning over him.
19 weeks: Rolled back to front and front to back. In one fell swoop!
21 weeks: First food. Avocado, spoon-fed in his high chair at home. Now that we're on-the-go a lot more, we grab organic pouches when we're out and about. I like that they keep snack time quick and clean. Not having to mess with spoons or bowls helps baby eat faster and frees up my hands sooner. That's really critical when I have two other kids running around!
28 weeks: Crawling.
28 weeks: Sitting up.
31 weeks: First word. “Mama.” I win!
37 weeks: Pulling up to a stand.
52 weeks: Holding his own food pouch. Okay, I know this isn't a typical milestone that people celebrate, but with three kids I can't even explain how UNBELIEVABLY THRILLED we were when he grabbed an open one from me and started sucking that bad boy down without assistance. With the third baby, it's moments like this that can really make you smile.
The only big milestone I feel is missing from this list is the day he started sleeping through the night. We had a couple “fluke” nights where he weirdly went 12 hours out of nowhere, and then regressed instantly back to 2 at-a-time. I have to look through my text messages to Nate and dig up that day, because it really is a HUGE parenting win that should be celebrated!
That's a good example of life when you have three kids, though…sometimes baby number three makes a leap but doesn't get the celebration and accolades the first one got.
Sometimes you're just super-stoked to see them to hold their own food pouch before they can walk.
At the end of the day, he gains immeasurably from the experience and knowledge that comes with lots of parenting practice. He also has the benefit of a big family, which means he'll be surrounded by boundless love for years and years to come.
