Porkyland carnitas

A couple weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be invited to Porkyland for lunch at their new location in Hillcrest. Porkyland has been around in La Jolla for years and is an institution in San Diego, known for their authentic Mexican cuisine. They've received all sorts of awards and been featured by my all-time favorite chef, Sam the Cooking Guy (who I've been known to gush over from time to time).

Their new location is just as good as the first, featuring the same mouthwatering entrees and inventive cuisine, like cactus quesadillas. Absolutely everything is made fresh in-house everyday. Their to-die-for carnitas take over six hours per batch and sell more than two tons monthly. That's four thousand pounds! I kid you not, they are indescribable.

While the food is more than enough to get me through the doors, I also enjoy the atmosphere. San Diegans have come to expect the same old scene at taco joints around town: neon signs, fluorescent lighting, plastic booths. Porkyland goes the extra mile to make their customers actually want to stick around. Comfortable seating, funky hanging lights and modern decor are complemented by the interesting art of Liliana Molins. And to top it all off, the service is quick and friendly with counter-style ordering.
