I know a lot of moms who say that they're too busy for beauty. The kids have zapped their time, and the remaining energy goes towards work or the dishes or whatever. I totally understand. Having a 2-year-old and a 4-month-old, I get it. But I still think we should make ourselves a priority and at least squeeze in a “busy beauty” routine whenever possible.

Busy Beauty Tips

COVERGIRL® Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 Foundation
CoverGirl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 Foundation works as a primer, foundation and concealer in one bottle. It's my ultimate, reliable foundation.

Double duty. Every go-to beauty item of mine serves more than one function. My CoverGirl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 foundation, for example, is SPF 20 so I don't have to worry about lathering on sunscreen in addition to my makeup in the California heat. Because, truth be told, if I'm pressed for time and faced with a choice between whipping up a cup of coffee or putting on my sunscreen for the day…caffeine wins, hands down! I know myself well enough to know that and to prepare accordingly with products that save time.

The right tool for the job. Spend the time and money initially to get the item that will do the best job for you. A great thing I've added to my beauty routine recently is this amazing foam round brush that helps me dry my hair faster and and maintain volume longer. Another example is in makeup choices: it's really worth it to seek out the right products for your skin tone. That way, you won't tack on frustrating minutes to your routine as you attempt to get it to look right. And always, always apply makeup with the correct brushes! I use a foam applicator for foundation. Fingertip application won't stay as well because the oil from your fingertips spreads into the makeup as you apply it and decreases its chances of setting properly.

Make it last. Whether it's tossing a wrinkled shirt in the dryer with a damp washcloth to get one more wear out of it or touching up our week-old manicure, we know how to be thrifty and hold our efforts over as long as possible. My latest obsession is dry shampoo. It lets me eek out a little more attractiveness on those busy beauty days that I just can't get a shower in. Come on, it happens to the best of us! In the makeup department, avoid constant touch-ups with products that won't budge until you want them to.

Busy Beauty: Put Yours to the Test

I decided to put some of my own advice to the test and photograph a picture of my makeup at the beginning and at the end of the day to see what products are working hardest for me. Here's my fresh face after my five-minute busy beauty routine consisting of foundation, a quick swipe of eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, blush and light lip gloss.

…and here I am later, after hours of chasing a toddler and wrangling a baby. A little worse for the wear, but not too bad! Eyeliner's a little smudgey, lip gloss is totally gone (not sure why I even bother with that), but the most important parts stayed put. I'm photo-ready for the many bloggy pics that inevitably get taken at all hours of the day around here.
