Wow, how is it already May? We have some major summer grilling holidays coming up! Mother's Day is this weekend and then Memorial Day on the 28th (the “unofficial” start of the summer grilling holidays), then of course all the grad parties, Father's Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day…we also have a couple family birthdays and other random excuses to party throughout the summer months.
We decided to pick up a new grill and some summer grilling gear at Kmart to get ready for all these party shenanigans. They have some awesome summer gear over there, including really, really good prices on grills and patio sets. In last Sunday's weekly deals circular, I found deals for 20% all patio cushions and umbrellas, 20% off all folding lawn furniture, a metal arbor with gate on sale for $79.99 (reg $149.99) and 50% off a hanging basket plant stand and deluxe basket plant stand! I'm also a Shop Your Way Rewards member, which means I get 10 points for every $1 I spend, and those add up quick for real savings that I can apply to my orders.
We went ahead and put everything on layaway since we were waiting on a payment to clear and didn't want to put anything this large on a credit card (we put meals, groceries, etc on a credit card that we pay off at the end of each month just to retain a solid credit history, but don't like to put anything too large over there because the sticker shock at the end of the month can be a doozy). Plus, the grill was on sale for $20 off and I wanted to lock in that price before it went up again! It was really simple to get a contract going online, and then we just went into the store a couple days later, paid it off and picked up our order in no time.
I picked up a few more summer grilling essentials while we were there, like some food, grill accessories and these bamboo skewers. These things are a lifesaver for simple grilling, and I also use them to secure stuffed chicken breasts that I bake in the oven.
The Char-Broil grill we got (for less than $400!) is AMAZING. Five burners plus a sear burner, a side grill, 833 square inches of cooking space, 65,000 BTUs (whatever that means, apparently it's good), stainless steel lid and four casters for easy movement throughout the yard. You can check out more of Kmart's options on their website, Twitter or Facebook.
We picked up a cover to keep our new grill nice and shiny for as long as possible, and a rotisserie that I've been lusting after for years. Unfortunately, the rotisserie ended up being too short for our mondo grill. I'm hoping they have a longer one that we can exchange it for next time we make a Kmart run.
Our summer grilling test run included chicken, pineapple skewers, hot dogs and burgers.
Did I mention that it has a warming rack to keep food nice and toasty while everything else finishes cooking? I LOVE this thing!
I forgot to get buns for the hot dogs (oops) so we improvised a little.
Brian's doing the low-carb thing, so he didn't need buns for his burgers, anyway.
I even made a grilled peach pie for dessert. Hot off the grill with vanilla ice cream, this was to die for.
Until next time! How are you gearing up for summer grilling?
