The simplest way to explain how and why we started a blog is the hot dog.

Stay with me here.

Yes, sir. We actually started Someday I’ll Learn in the spirit of new families learning what it takes to operate well and survive together.

After we got our feet under us, of course, we expanded to family adventure and the advanced experiences that make spending time with each other great. Just like the hot dog.

The hot dog is one of the simplest and greatest of foods. It’s like a meat banana. Just about everything you need is right there for the staple of a meal. When you start out, all you need is a hot dog and a bun. BAM! You have a meal. A small meal, but a meal nonetheless.

That's just like the beginning of a family. Everything can start out simple.

Then one night, just after I slipped into creamy cloudy dreamland, my wife rolled over in bed and said, “I think we're ready for some mustard.” Bleary-eyed, I slowly looked at her, rubbed my face and asked, “What?”

“I think we’re ready for a baby,” she stated again. And like the great novice chefs that we were, we set off on expanding our hot dog.

Five years later, my hot dog is so advanced, you couldn’t make it back to your seat in Dodger stadium without spilling some of it. Well, to be honest, neither can we. Oh, with four boys, we have a little bit of everything: sauerkraut, onions, spicy mustard and sweet relish. Sure, onions is a bit of a crybaby but we love him all the same and at least he doesn’t break as much stuff as spicy mustard. Spicy mustard is the zany one, after all.
