Decorate-Your-Own Holiday Pizza

Pizza is awesome and so are the holidays, so a holiday pizza just makes sense. Amiright?!

Everybody seems to be one-upping each other with elaborate party themes this season, but this one is super-simple. Get a bunch of pals together with a ton of toppings and cookie cutters and let them go to town! Guests will be entertained and well-fed. The best part is that you can serve pizza on paper plates without any formal seating arrangement, so clean-up is easy as pie.

Easy as PIZZA pie!

I've told you guys about my friend Laura and how we often get our kids together (a total of six boys under five!) for playdates.

I came up with the idea for a decorate-your-own holiday pizza party as a fun activity to keep our families busy and get them all fed – a task that can be surprisingly challenging.

I avoid gluten but Laura's family – along with Nate – doesn't, so it can be hard to find food that the whole crew really enjoys. We recently started working with Smart Flour Foods, and their frozen pizza is pretty much the best thing since sliced bread.

Smart Flour Foods makes a couple different varieties of pizza including Garden Margherita pizza and Uncured Pepperoni pizza, made with vegetarian-fed pork with no nitrates. I picked up a bunch of their pizza crusts – made with ancient grains including sorghum, amaranth and teff – and let everyone have at it with an array of toppings.

The boys had a blast laying out different combinations of sauce, cheese, veggies and meats.

Some of their combinations were seriously adorable!

My personal favorite was the simple pizza stars and pizza trees we made with cookie cutters.

That seemed to be a hit with the kids, too!

As for the adults, they got super-fancy with all sorts of tasty combinations. I think this here was an impressionistic barbecue chicken “garland pizza” with a rope of red onion and dashes of kale “mistletoe.” I can tell you one thing for sure: it was delicious.
