Are you try to find great books for young kids to read? Reading is a very important skill that every child should develop. When your kids are young, though, it may not be easy to find something that they are interested in.
Encouraging your child to build and develop a reading habit – especially if you have a reluctant reader – requires books they find really interesting. You just need that one book that can truly captivate their attention from start to finish, motivating them to read more often.
I've asked other parents and a lot of them who've been through this with their kids say the same thing. Focus on finding books based on their areas of interest. When trying to books for young kids to read, that really goes a long way to help.
I've put together a list of books our community highly recommended, since I know that kids outside of our own family may have different interests. If you're trying to find the best books for young kids to read, this is a great list to start with!
The Mysterious Benedict Society
This is a really great novel written by Trenton Lee Stewart and illustrated by Carson Ellis with its first publishing in 2007. If you have a kid who is interested in mystery fiction and kids with special gifts, this one is definitely a book your kids will love.
The Mysterious Benedict Society tells a story about dozens of children who respond to a peculiar ad in the newspaper and are then put through a series of mind-bending tests, which readers take along with them. Only four children – two boys and two girls – succeed. You can get it on Amazon today.
The Neverending Story
This is a great novel by Michael Ende that also has a film adaptation. The film only references the first half of the book, and consequently doesn't really convey the message of the title as it was portrayed in the novel.
The Neverending Story tells the story of a boy who was swept into the magical world of Fantastica. He finds that he has actually become a character in the story, only to soon realize that this mysteriously enchanted world is in great danger. Turns out? He is the one chosen to save it. Hatchet
This wilderness survival novel written by American writer Gary Paulsen is a great book for young kids to read. A lot of boy moms recommended this one and I actually remember loving this as a kid in 5th grade, so I suggest you check it out.
Hatchet tells a captivating story of thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson. Haunted by his secret knowledge of his mother’s infidelity, he is traveling by single-engine plane to visit his father for the first time since the divorce. When the plane crashes – killing the pilot – the sole survivor is Brian. As you can see right off the bat, some of the themes in this story are fairly advanced for little readers, so tread lightly. This may be best for middle grades and up. Get it on Amazon today!
The Call of the Wild and White Fang
This one is a likely to be a winner for young kids who love dog stories, a great novel by Jack London.
The Call of the Wild is Jack London's best known book. It tells the story of a young dog named Buck, a huge Saint Bernard, who is kidnapped from his comfortable life in California and transported to the Klondike Gold Rush. His abductors sell him to be used as a sled dog for the miners in the North. Get it on Amazon.
