Word of the Year: Spirit

picture frame craft

We've finally decided what to do with that big empty space above the kitchen nook! This picture frame craft is so easy, and took just about half an hour of active work.

Picture Frame Craft: Broken to Beautiful

You'll need:
An old picture frame or art frame
Twine (and a drill for pilot holes)
Clothespins
Paint, primer and brushes (optional)

broken picture frame

Nana and Papa passed this pretty picture and frame onto us when they update a room in their house, but the glass sadly didn't survive the move into our new home. And I wasn't about to try and track down a new piece of glass. Ain't nobody got time fo dat!

picture frame backing

So it was time for a picture frame craft rehaul. I stripped away the paper backing and set the frame and picture aside.

staple gun

You have to pull out all the staples that are holding the picture in. I found that a flathead screwdriver worked well to pry them up.

sanding picture frame

A quick sanding with 100-grit sandpaper reduces glossiness and gives the paint some grooves to stick to. I could've left it as is, but I had all the paint out for another project so I figured I'd up the creativity in the picture frame craft while I was at it.

picture frame primer

A single coat of primer gives a smooth base for long-lasting coverage. I use Kilz Clean Start Primer from Home Depot because it has zero VOC and offers good coverage.

measuring a picture frame

I marked three dots evenly distributed on both sides of the frame to indicate where I'd string my twine through.

drill through wood

I drilled pilot holes with a 1/8″ drill bit. You may need one slightly larger or smaller depending on the thickness of your twine.

Olympic One in Satin from Lowe's color-matched to Valspar's Northern Glen coated the picture frame and then it was time to tie the twine on, simply pushing it through the pilot holes and knotting it tightly on each side.

Clothespins added and…tada!

twine + an old frame + clothespins

This picture frame craft is perfect for commitment-phobes like me who don't want to take the time and effort to frame up family photos or snapshots. I never want to put TOO much effort into pictures I may just want to replace tomorrow! This makes it easy to have an ever-rotating collection of pictures on the wall.

our latest wall hanging

I created graphics with the nine words from our family's scripture of the year, Galations 5:22-23. Love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. I'm striving for all of those thing in our new home.

You can download the whole set to print yourself with that handy button above. Even if you're not religious, I think they're pretty good words to live by! Or if you're more of the online Pinspiration kinda person, here ya go.

What do you think about our picture frame craft? What would you put up there to add some inspiration in YOUR everyday life?
