Semi-Homemade Easy German Chocolate Cake

| | Updated:

I know that cooking a German chocolate cake is usually the exact opposite the opposite of “easy.” Many German chocolate cake recipes call for a plethora of ingredients and complicated layering techniques. However, this recipe couldn't be easier. It cheats a little bit by using boxed cake mix, but it makes the most deliciously moist German chocolate cake. Trust me. If you make it and don't like it, I'll gladly eat it all for you.

Easy German Chocolate Cake
German chocolate cake mix
1 cup chopped pecans
1 cup shredded coconut
8 oz cream cheese
1 1/2 cups butter
1 box powdered sugar

Grease the bottom of a 9×13 inch pan and sprinkle pecans and coconut over the bottom of the pan.

Mix the German chocolate cake mix according to the directions and pour over the coconut and pecans.

Melt the cream cheese and butter together and mix with the powdered sugar. Pour this over the cake mix.

Bake according to the boxed cake directions.

When cool, serve by turning each piece upside down when removed from the pan. Don't turn the whole the entire cake upside down, or you'll end up with a mushy mess. Simply flip each piece upside down as you serve it. There you have it: easy, mostly-homemade German chocolate cake.

  1.  YUM!  This is my kind of recipe!  I love to take boxed mixes and “fancy ’em up” a bit.  It totally counts as homemade.
