Mmmm, Paleo hot chocolate! Before you all get started: yes, I know that cavemen probably didn't sit around sipping sweet drinks or even noshing on cocoa beans. And they definitely didn't add tequila to said concoction to give it a nice, smooth, Mexican flair. They were missing out, I say!
My interpretation of the popular low-carb, high-protein lifestyle is extremely simple: I avoid food that doesn't make my body feel good.
And this paleo hot chocolate? It feels goooooood. High in awesome antioxidants and a little grown-up mix-in, it's the perfect party drink for those of us who have given up syrupy sweets in favor of better-for-me treats. With a kick.

Our Paleo Hot Chocolate Ingredients
Navitas is my favorite cacao powder on the planet. It's an organic, raw superfood packed with magnesium and iron. I can't get enough. It's not cheap, but a little goes a long way.
Swerve is known as “the ultimate sugar replacement,” derived from fruits and vegetables through a unique fermentation process using an ingredient in honeycomb. It's all-natural, measures cup-for-cup exactly like sugar, and doesn't affect glucose or insulin levels. We use it in place of traditional cane sugar in all our recipes and coffee. You can try coconut milk instead of almond in this recipe, but I'd definitely go for the “light” version. This is a thick cup of paleo hot chocolate, and straight coconut milk wouldn't be a good direct swap.
I made this the other day when Uncle Brian came over to play with the kids and help out with some random stuff around the house. He and Nate and I lazed around by the fire, doing our mountains of laundry (yes, our house still serves as the laundromat for the occasional friend in a washing machine-less apartment). It felt so fittingly cozy to sip a warm, thick drink while the kids played and a holiday movie piped up in the background.
“No kids, don't touch mommy's paleo hot chocolate! Don't you have a juice box or something?”
Living room bliss.
Have you tried Swerve sweetener yet? What healthy little swaps do you make in the kitchen?
Definitely looking forward to trying this!! Recently enjoyed yummy eggnog with Crown Royal-Private Stock.. soooo delicious and smooth & perfect for these cold nights we’ve been having lately. Thanks for the recipe!
