Ugh, Valentine's Day. I don't mean to be all “bah humbug” on this holiday, but it's been a rough one for me. Valentine's Day and I do NOT have a happy history. No, I'm not going to go there. It's in the past. Long story short, I informed Nate during our very first year together that we would NOT be doing the traditional seasonal thing each February. Don't get me jewelry and flowers and chocolates unless you really want to piss me off. Cliche much? If you think I'm the lone voice of dissent, think again. I know a ton of women who feel exactly the same way! So, dudes, don't buy into all those sappy commercials. Here's how to really rock Valentine's Day.
Pay attention. Remember that time around your dad's birthday a couple months ago when your girlfriend's cake flopped and she casually mentioned that she's always wanted to take a cupcake decorating class? That was a golden nugget of insight that you should have filed away for a special occasion such as this. All we really want is for you to notice and care about what we have to say. Playing off of those details and gifting accordingly will help you rock every single day.
Make us something. Dinner. A scarf. A photo book. You can paint hearts on a rock and we'll probably love it.
Get dressed up. It doesn't matter if you can't take us out. Fake it till you make it. Throw on your old tuxedo and light some candles. We're all suckers for a fairy tale. Muster up a little Prince Charming.
Hygiene. It feels weird that I actually have to say this, but I totally do. Take a shower. Throw on some cologne. Swish that LISTERINE. And for mega bonus points, whiten your teeth and flash those pearly whites at us! We use REMBRANDT Deeply White + Peroxide Fresh Mint toothpaste because it whitens teeth quickly with the enamel-safe ingredient that dentists use (I've learned the hard way in the past that not all whiteners are actually safe for your teeth, so choose wisely).
Share. Nothing says “I love you” quite like handing over something you truly care about. Your girlfriend will flip if you give her a spare drawer in your apartment or your childhood stuffed animal. It's like handing over a piece of your heart.
So how are you planning to rock Valentine's Day? You can start by getting a printable coupon for $3 off any two REMBRANDT Whitening Paste or Rinse products at HealthyEssentials.com. And for all you moms, this would also make a sweet/funny Valentine's Day gift and subtle hint for teenage sons. Just sayin. Never hurts to offer a little direction in the hygiene department, does it?
